Seeing perhaps the beginning of a slowdown, rival silicon foundry giants Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) separately saw their sales slip in September.

TSMC announced that its net sales on an unconsolidated basis were $811.8 million, a decrease of 0.5 percent from August but up 6.5 percent over September 2005. Revenues for January through September 2006 totaled $7.3 billion, an increase of 30.8 percent over the same period in 2005.

Meanwhile, UMC said that its sales were $279 million in September, down 1.94 percent from August but up 8.6 percent from the same period a year ago. For the period between January and September, its sales jumped 23.2 percent to $2.4 billion.

UMC reported a solidly profitable Q2 and predicted more of the same in the Q3.
