Coherent Inc.'s Cube 445 is a compact, conduction-cooled laser that delivers 40mW of power at 445nm. It promises higher reliability, lower noise and longer lifetime than HeCd gas lasers, which were formerly the only choice at this wavelength. Cube 445 also promises superior beam characteristics compared to HeCd lasers, a beam divergence of 0.6mrad, a pointing stability of under 6?rad/C and a typical RMS noise level of 0.05 percent (20Hz to 100MHz). Plus, the laser head measures only 100-by-40-by-40mm and dissipates typically 3W of heat.

Coherent said the mechanical, optical and thermal characteristics of its new laser system will make it attractive to OEM system builders. The device also streamlines the process of system design because it can be directly modulated (analog or digital) at bandwidths up to 125MHz. Interface to the laser is through standard USB and RS-232 with full control and measurements. It also shares the same form factor as Cube lasers at other wavelengths, thus simplifying design of multiwavelength systems, the company explained.

Applications for the Cube 445 laser include biomedicine, microelectronics and engineering prototyping. Specific examples of these applications include semiconductor inspection, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy and stereo lithography.
