Korean, U.S. companies partner on deep UV LEDs

Seoul Optodevice Co. (SOC) and U.S. partner Sensor Electronic Technology Inc. (SETI) said they have completed joint development of a new line of deep UV LEDs that double output power and lifetime than existing devices.

The announcement came three months after SOC commercialized deep UV LEDs. With SETI, SOC claims to be the first company to produce III-nitride-based deep UV LEDs with emission wavelengths ranging from 265- to 340nm, SOC said in a statement.

SOC is a subsidiary of Seoul Semiconductor Co., South Korea's largest LED maker. The Korean company said that commercialization became feasible through its packaging technology, which doubles extraction efficiency, taking advantage of the thermal conductivity of surface-mount packages.

Maximum output power of the 280nm LED reached 1.5mW at 20mA. The new LEDs could represent a non-toxic, solid-state replacement for mercury lamps, SOC said. The new LEDs could also be used in home appliances, sterilization of hygienic products, biomedical analysis, bioagent detection and detecting counterfeit currency.
