DRAM manufacturers from Taiwan have reportedly been keeping up with their foreign counterparts in terms of output at their 12-inch fabs, according to industry sources. Makers from Taiwan are reportedly expanding production at their 12-inch facilities to reduce production costs by 20 percent to 30 percent.

Powerchip Semiconductors Corp. acquires 80 percent of its output from its 12-inch fabs. Currently, the company has three 12-inch fab plants and reportedly plans to establish additional plants to keep up with the strong demand coming for DRAM products.

ProMOS Technologies Inc. also obtains about 80 percent of its output from its two 12-inch fabs and is in the process of establishing its third 12-inch fab plant. Inotera Memories Inc. acquires all of its products from 12-inch fabs. On the other hand, Nanya Technology Corp. is still constructing its first 12-inch fab, with pilot operations slated to begin in the third quarter of next year.

According to sources, these Taiwan companies' foreign counterparts are not fully utilizing their 12-inch fab capacities. Elpida Memory Inc. obtains 76 percent of production from its 12-inch fab while Qimonda AG, 56 percent; Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd, 50 percent; Micron Technology Inc., 31 percent; and Hynix Semiconductor Inc., 26 percent.
