Synplicity Inc. introduced its Synplify Pro synthesis software, which supports Xilinx's recently announced Virtex-5 LXT FPGA, the newest addition to Xilinx' Virtex product line. The support results from an ongoing development relationship between the two companies.

The Virtex-5 LXT FPGAs represent the second of four domain-optimized families. The LXT platform claims to be the first FPGA to deliver hard-coded PCI Express endpoint and tri-mode Ethernet media access controller (MAC) blocks. The Virtex-5 LXT platform also features a 65nm transceiver that typically consumes less than 100mW per channel at 3.2Gbps.

According to Xilinx, the LXT platform is aimed at the large number of serial connectivity applications ranging from 100Mbps to 3.2Gbps. It addresses the bandwidth, power and cost targets facing equipment vendors working to enable voice, video and data over a single broadband Internet Protocol connection.

"The Virtex-5 LXT platform opens up a much broader market for FPGAs, and we are excited to provide optimized support for these high-performance devices," said Andy Haines, senior vice president of marketing at Synplicity, in a statement.

The Synplify Pro software for the LXT platform is available now. To support future devices, Synplicity and Xilinx continue to work together in an "ultra-high capacity timing closure task force" initiated in May 2006.
