Micropower LDOs deliver up to 80V input voltage

Linear Technology Corp. has announced two micropower LDOs with input voltage capability up to 80V. The LT3012 and LT3013 feature a dropout voltage of 400mV while delivering up to 250mA load current. Their wide adjustable capability of 1.24-60V makes them suitable for automotive, 48V telecom backup supplies and industrial control applications.

Additionally, their quiescent current of 40?A (operating) and 1?A (shutdown) makes them suitable for battery-powered memory "keep alive" systems that require extended run times. The LT3013's Powergood flag feature is programmable and indicates output regulation.

For high voltage applications that require large input-to-output differentials, both devices offer a compact and thermally effective solution. Their DFN and TSSOP packages provide thermal resistances comparable to much larger conventional packages.

These LDOs operate with tiny, low-cost ceramic output capacitors. They are stable with only a 3.3?F output capacitor, compared to older regulator devices of comparable output current and high voltage requiring 10?F to more than 100?F. These tiny external capacitors can be used without any necessary series resistance as is common with many other regulators. Internal protection circuitry includes reverse-battery protection, current limiting, thermal limiting and reverse-current protection.

The LT3012EDE (12-lead low profile 3-by-4-by-0.75mm DFN package) and LT3012EFE (16-lead thermally enhanced TSSOP package) are available from stock. 1,000-piece pricing is set at $2.05 and $2.20 each, respectively. The LT3013EDE and LT3013EFE are available from stock in the same packaging with 1,000-piece pricing set at $2.25 and $2.40 each, respectively.
