Samsung Electronics announced that three of its flash solid-state disk (SSD) drives have been certified by Microsoft for use in Windows-compatible peripherals. Microsoft validated that Samsung's SSDs met its requirements for Windows storage media, Samsung said.

The company's SSDs have a data read speed of 57Mbps and a write speed of 32Mbps, which it claims is more than double the performance of a 1.8-inch hard drive. The 50-fold speed increase is expected to reduce system boot time and speed up many Window-compatible applications.

SSD power usage rates in operational mode are less than 0.5W and 40mW in sleep mode, extended battery life by up to 30 minutes, Samsung claimed.

Microsoft has also certified two versions of Samsung's 32Gbyte, 1.8-inch SSD and a 16Gbyte version. The new sizes support sub-notebook PCs, the company added.
