LCD makers in mainland China will catch up with its counterparts in Taiwan and South Korea five years from now, aid Ching-Siang Liao, chairman of Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO).

Today, the leading makers of LCD panels are based in Taiwan and South Korea. According to Liao, declining prices of LCD TVs and increasing demand from the notebook and PC monitor sectors will further push up Taiwan's panel industry. The LCD TV market will also be driven by the growing popularity of digital TV broadcasting.

Meanwhile, mainland China lags behind Taiwan and South Korea in terms of manufacturing high-end TFT LCDs. China's most advanced TFT LCD production is at 5G. Makers are placing emphasis on products used in PCs, as compared to Taiwan and South Korea makers who target the large-sized LCD TV sector.
