O2Micro International Ltd was issued 16 claims under U. S. patent number 7,112,943 for its Enabling Circuit for avoiding Negative Voltage Transients. The solution was a continuation of the invention issued June 2005 under U. S. patent number 6,906,497.

The patented architecture is designed to protect the battery charger controller IC from damage in a portable electronic device, which includes notebook computer, cellphone, PDA, portable media player and MP3 player applications. It also simplifies system implementation by avoiding negative voltage spikes on the controller terminals.

"This battery charger architecture increases the safety of charging operation and reduces the overall application cost," said Dr. Alex Hartular, vice president of O2Micro.
