Conexant Systems Inc. has agreed to pay $5 million in cash for the packet-switching business of Zarlink Semiconductor Inc.

Zarlink has developed several generations of packet switches. Unlike most native packet switches, its line was originally designed for packet handling over time-division multiplexed networks.

More recently, Zarlink has developed packet switches for Fast Ethernet switching. Conexant said it will use the latter designs to complement its DSL-based residential gateway business. The Zarlink team, responsible for more than 40 patents, will join Conexant's broadband access group in Newport Beach, Calif. Conexant will use designs in development of next-generation VDSL line cards.

As yet undetermined is how the sale of the unit might affect Zarlink's timing-over-packet designs, and its recent addition of optical components, both areas that could use technology from the packet switches designed by Zarlink.
