VoIP chip loaded with GbE devices

Texas Instruments Inc.'s (TI) latest VoIP processor ensures delay-free voice in small- and medium-business applications. The TNETV1051 combines a 300MHz MIPS processor and 150MHz C55x DSP with dual GbE medium-access control (MAC) devices and an on-chip GbE switch.

While some might consider that lineup overkill, product manager Brent Lorenz said support for wideband codecs requires significant bandwidth, even in lower-end voice gateways. With most small enterprises moving up from Fast Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet, including a gigabit switch on-chip made sense, he said.

The 1051 offers two kinds of security processing. A static packet filter protects against denial-of-service attacks at L3 and L4, while an encryption accelerator speeds processing of all major file encryption and hashing algorithms, including Advanced Encryption Standard, Data Encryption Standard/Triple DES and SHA-1/MD5 hash codes. Many gateway manufacturers not only encrypt voice channels, Lorenz said, but also encrypt the Session Initiation Protocol signaling used in voice clients.

The DSP core can support up to six channels of standard PCM voice conferencing or four channels of wideband conferencing, and supports FXS and T.38 fax services. The voice processor is the first since a residential gateway device to support the new Piqua software for monitoring IP flows, and TI has upgraded its echo-cancellation software to support new features, such as split band for wideband codecs. The chip supports IPv6 and secure Real-Time Protocol.

Color support
The 1051 is the first VoIP chip to integrate a color LCD controller, which TI's director of VoIP product management Angela Raucher said is a reflection of the number of low-end gateways now supporting color screens. The chip can work with a variety of newer memory types, including NAND/NOR flash and DDR SDRAM.

Dual GbE ports in TNETV1051 ensure delay-free voice.

Chip samples will come with a full Telogy Networks software stack.
