The LCD-TV market in China is poised to grow at a 49 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) during the 2005 to 2010 period, according to iSuppli Corp.

The market research firm said it expects China's LCD-TV shipments to increase from 1.4 million units last year to more than 20 million in 2010. iSuppli also said that Chinese LCD-TV market revenue is growing to $12.8 billion rising at CAGR of 59.4 percent from $1.3 billion in 2005.

According to the firm, the 30-inch and larger sized sets are enjoying the fastest growth rate of all LCD-TVs in China, due to customers' preference for large-sized TVs and declining prices. iSuppli expects this price decline to continue as sixth- and seventh-generation LCD fabs reach full production. Shipments of 30-inch and larger LCD-TVs will account for more than 80 percent of China's market by 2010, the firm predicts.

"With eighth-generation LCD fabs going into operation, LCD-TVs will compete with plasma and microdisplay rear-projection sets in the 50-inch and greater size range in China in the near future," said Kathleen Zhang, China industry analyst at iSuppli.

LCD-TVs will account for 56 percent of China's overall television revenue by 2007, according to iSuppli. The firm further forecasts that LCD-TV unit shipments in China will match those of cathode ray tube (CRT)-based sets by 2010, iSuppli said.

China's OEMs and retailers are aggressively promoting LCD-TVs, but not PDP televisions. According to iSuppli, Chinese OEMs appear to be far less interested in developing the market for PDP televisions.
