Several major optoelectronics components makers and OEMs have decided that the common multi-source agreement package types developed for 10Gbps interfaces should serve the optical world at 40Gbps as well. The X40 MSA Group was announced to develop an MSA package similar to Xenpak offerings at lower speeds.

Aeluros Inc., Broadcom Corp., Emcore Corp., Finisar Corp., Infinera Corp., Juniper Networks Inc., MergeOptics GmbH, Tyco Electronics Inc. and Vitesse Semiconductor are the founding members of the group, which will aim for a multirate package that is transparent to the data framing format used, hence able to carry Sonet, Ethernet and other types of traffic. Infinera CTO Drew Perkins will serve as chairman of the new coalition.

The X40 MSA will use a four-channel coarse wave-division multiplexed method, with each of the four channels supporting data rates of 9.953- to 11.1Gbps, supporting an aggregate throughput of 39.8- to 44.4Gbps. Each lane of the CWDM package will be based on an XFI interface, and the optical source will be based on uncooled 1,310nm lasers. The MSA spec will define in-band diagnostic capability to monitor link performance.
