To increase its presence in the region and expand its role as a trendsetter in the development of innovations, Siemens Corporate Technology (CT) officially opened its central research laboratory in Beijing, China, its largest in Asia Pacific. Siemens disclosed that around $102.1 billion will be invested in the Beijing location as well as in Shanghai by 2010.

The "Siemens Corporate Technology" research center will house scientists who will conduct research on new environmental, energy, healthcare and automation technologies. Currently, the research center has 200 scientists, which will be increased to over 300 by 2008.

"The People's Republic of China is one of the most important pillars of our business in the Asia Pacific region and is gaining increasing importance in our operating business globally," said Prof. Hermann Requardt, member of the Siemens AG corporate executive committee and head of Siemens CT. "In selecting a new research location, proximity to our customers is the decisive factoras well as proximity to production locations and outstanding universities."

Vice chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission Zhang Xiaoqiang expressed the China government's interest in a mutually profitable collaboration with Siemens over many years. Innovations are the key to China's social and economic development, he said, noting that Siemens was one of the international enterprises in this regard.

Requardt stressed the importance of the location within the Siemens research network. "Innovation does not happen by chance. It is the result of hard work and it must be managed. And that includes having an international research network with locations in all growth markets and technological hot spots," he said.

Dr. Richard Hausmann, head of Siemens China Regional Company, also noted China's important role in Siemens' global business and outlined his vision of a future cooperation between Siemens Corporate Technology China and the R&D units of the Siemens Groups in the "middle country." With a view toward securing China's technological future, he looked forward to innovations that would meet China's needs and would produce valuable benefits for the people of the country.
