Samsung Electronics said that S-LCD Corp., its joint venture with Sony Corp., will turn a profit after only two and a half years in the capital-intensive panel business.

The company said in a statement that S-LCD will be profitable this year "because it has recorded operating profits in business so far this year and its sales totaled 3 trillion won ($3.16 billion) during the [first] three quarters of this year."

S-LCD posted a net loss in 2005, according to a Samsung spokeswoman, who declined to elaborate.

S-LCD said it is completing construction at an 8th-generation LCD fabrication line at its Tangjeong complex. The JV company started mass producing LCD panels on it 7th-generation line in April 2005, giving both Samsung and Sony access to a supply of large-screen LCD TV panels.

The new S-LCD line will begin production next fall, adding another 50,000 glass substrates to its overall monthly production capacity. The new fab line will mainly be used to produce LCD panels for 52-inch or larger diagonal LCD TVs, Samsung said.
