Third quarter worldwide silicon wafer area shipments increased more than 5 percent sequentially and 18 percent year-to-year, according to the Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) of Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International.

Total silicon wafer area shipments were 2,074 million square inches during the most recent quarter, an increase from the 1,966 million square inches shipped during the previous quarter, SMG said. Third quarter shipments of polished, epitaxial and non-polished wafers were up both year-to-year and sequentially.

"We have seen tremendous growth in demand for silicon wafer shipments over the past year," said Tatsuhiko Shigematsu, SMG chairman and chief technology officer at Sumco Corp. "Going forward, we expect the growth rate to be in the single digits next year, but anticipate double digit growth in 2008 according to the recent SMG consensus forecast."

SMG said last month it expects silicon wafer shipments to increase by 18 percent in 2006, reaching 7,811 million square inches.
