Avago Technologies announced it has developed the industry's thinnest surface-mount (SMT) LEDs in a 0603 package, enabling mobile device designers to develop even smaller and thinner handsets, handheld games and other mobile devices.

With an ultra-small form factor about the size of a pencil tip, these low-power LEDs also provide excellent illumination with minimum current consumption. The chipLED measures 1.6(L)-by-0.8(W)-by-0.25(H)mm. In addition, the top emitting LED packages represent a lower-cost alternative to electroluminescent (EL) backlighting, eliminating the need for high voltages and difficulties with high-frequency electrical noise, said the company.

These ChipLED lamps are available in blue and phosphor white, which are colors most widely used by handset manufacturers. The ultra-thin HSMR-CL25 (blue) and HSMW-CL25 (white) LEDs are suitable for backlighting keypads and status indicators in the thinnest handsets, as well as for office automation devices and consumer electronics.

The HSMR-CL25 is an indium gallium nitride (InGaN) blue LED, with a 473nm dominant wavelength and 11.2-45mcd luminous intensity, while the HSMW-CL25 is InGaN phosphor white with a 28.5-112.5mcd luminous intensity. All intensities are typical, measured at 5mA drive current, and all packages use diffused optics. The top emitting package, with its wide viewing angle, is suitable for direct backlighting or for use with light pipes.

A special leadframe construction of the HSMx-CL25 lead-free ChipLED package series provides efficient transfer of heat away from the LED chip to permit operation over the -40C to 85C temperature range. The package is compatible with IR reflow soldering.

Supplied in 8mm tape on 178mm diameter reels, the HSMR-CL25 and HSMW-CL25 ultra-thin ChipLEDs are priced at 14 cents in quantities of 10,000. Samples and production quantities are already available.
