Freescale i.MX apps processor powers Sony's mylo

The Freescale Semiconductor i.MX21 applications processor provides the multimedia functionality for Sony's new mobile entertainment devicethe mylo personal communicator.

According to the press release, the i.MX21 multimedia applications processor contributes to the advanced multimedia functionality of the Sony mylo personal communicator including its VoIP phone communication. The mylo is a portable communication device with a full keyboard in a small form factor. It allows users to access the Internet via WLAN or Wi-Fi hotspots enabling web browsing, instant messaging and voice calls.

The i.MX family of applications processors is designed for emerging Internet-based multimedia devices such as VoIP communicators and wireless IP phones. The i.MX21 processor provides high-performance video and graphics capabilities including MPEG-4 hardware encoding and decoding, Freescale said.

"We are very pleased that our i.MX21 multimedia applications processor is part of the Sony mylo, the innovative high-performance IP communications product. By leveraging the i.MX processor feature set, manufacturers are able to further expand and differentiate the functionality and performance of their mobile devices," said Berardino Baratta, general manager of the multimedia applications division at Freescale.
