The convergence of functionality between consumer electronics (CE) and PCs will drive further demand for both products, shared Joe Menard, corporate VP of AMD's consumer business segment, at last week's Samsung Semiconductor Executive Summit: futureUNLIMITED.

In a presentation entitled, "Where PCs meet consumer electronics," Menard's discussion tackled several visionary concepts, including a hybrid STB that connects to a home PC to expand user experience and stimulate greater demand for both computation and CE applications; an easy-to-use home media server that allows quick access to stored multimedia content from various CE devices in the home; and a combined STB and PC. The solutions in these concepts involve full-featured PCs providing advanced multimedia functionality, powered by AMD microprocessors and incorporating Samsung Semiconductor DRAM.

Menard also assessed the opportunities for IC designers and manufacturers that are being created by the convergence of traditional PC functionality and CE applications. The AMD executive called for steps to make the devices more user-friendly, with higher levels of quality and increased bandwidth.

Senior executives from Samsung, ESPN-HD, Qualcomm, the Semiconductor Industry Association and the Consumer Electronics Association also shared their insights on the rapidly growing industry.
