Mobile TV chip specialist DiBcom will open a software development centre in Bangalore, India, its first foray away from R&D at its home base in France.

The company says the Indian group would complement all software development currently in progress and that expanding to India reflects its commitment towards strategic partnerships with international hardware and software vendors.

DiBcom says the Bangalore site will also enhance customer and ODM support in the development and product integration of platforms, as well as establishing a strong foothold in the "dynamic DVB-H Indian market."

The development group in India will help with new software stacks for DiBcom's tri-band RF tuner that has a tightly integrated DVB-T and DVB-H demodulator and extend this device for applications in platforms for residential and automotive set top boxes, desktop and laptop PCs, personal media players and LCD TVs and mobile phone and Smartphone accessories.

"Although these various platforms allow generic portable and mobile TV reception, each software integration requirement is unique and time sensitive", said Yannick Levy, CEO of DiBcom.

DiBcom's focus on emerging markets is underscored by recent mobile TV trials in India and South Africa. Doordashan, India's national broadcaster, already has DVB-T pilot broadcasts on air in four cities including the capital Delhi, and is currently overseeing a mobile TV trial using DVB-H technology.

The company says it is also looking closely at developments in South Africa, where it already sells DiBcom chipsets and where the broadcast network operator Sentech announced plans to rollout digital terrestrial TV by the end of this year. In addition, the DVB-H trial that started in Johannesburg in October 2005 has been expanded to include other cities, including Pretoria.
