Avago intros 'smallest' 0.5W high-brightness LEDs

Avago's 0.5W LED series

Avago Technologies has introduced a series of half-watt (0.5W), high-brightness red-orange and amber LEDs in an automotive-industry-standard PLCC-4 SMT package. Touted to be the industry's first, this new series of 0.5W power LEDs feature the industry's smallest package size and are optimized for long operating life under severe environmental conditions, the company said, making them suitable for automotive exterior lighting applications.

The ASMC-QxB2-Txxx series of SMT LEDs are the latest addition to Avago's family of Envisium Mid-Power LEDs. The target automotive applications for these new LEDs include rear combination lamps, center high-mounted stop lights (CHSML), tail lights, brake lights, side mirror turn-signal repeaters, and marker lamps for trucks and trailers. The high-brightness output per LED and small package footprint (3.2-by-2.8-by-1.9 mm) of the 0.5W Envisium series enable greater flexibility in designing the size, shape and appearance of lighting assemblies, according ot the company.

Jedec-qualified
In addition to the combination of high brightness, long life and compact size, the new LED series provides two advantages in the automotive production environment: They can be easily soldered using conventional surface mount techniques to minimize production costs, and the package is qualified to a Jedec moisture sensitive level (MSL) rating of 2A. For manufacturers, this rating means that the 0.5W LEDs can be kept in the open air (30C, 60 percent relative humidity) for up to four weeks after being removed from its sealed package without the need to remove absorbed moisture.

The ASMC-QHB2-TCD0E (red-orange) and ASMC-QAB2-TAC0E (amber) Envisium LEDs feature typical luminous flux of 6.6 lumens and 9.3 lumens, respectively, at 150mA drive currents. Other features include:

  • High optical efficiency: 35 lumens/W typical for red-orange, 20 lumens/W typical for amber

  • 120 viewing angle

  • Low thermal resistance: 60C/W junction to pin

  • Standard PLCC-4 four-pin, leaded-chip carrier is a form and fit replacement for industry standard automotive PLCC-4 LEDs from other manufacturers

  • Available in 12mm tape on 180mm diameter reels for automated assembly

  • ESD: able to withstand voltage up to 2kV per JESD22-A114-B

  • Operating temperature range of -40C to 100C

Avago's amber and red-orange Envisium 0.5W Power PLCC-4 LEDs are priced from 23 cents to 29 cents each depending on quantity. Samples and production quantities are available today.
