A Wall Street analyst believes that Broadcom Corp. has secured a place in Apple Computer Inc.'s anticipated mobile phone product, according to a Reuters report.

UBS Securities LLC analyst Alex Gauna called it a meaningful design win for Broadcom, but provided few others details, including projections of how much revenue it could mean for the fabless chip vendor, the report said. Gauna said Apple could sell as many as 12 million so-called iPhones next year, according to the report.

Apple has yet to confirm speculation, supported by recent patent applications, that the company is developing a mobile phone product.

Chris Caso, an analyst with Friedman, Billings, Ramsey & Co. Inc., said in a research note published Nov. 21 that an applications processor from PortalPlayer Inc. has been designed into the Apple phone, which Caso expects to be announced late in the first quarter of 2007.

Broadcom currently supplies a video processor for the video-capable iPod personal media device. Analyst Satya Chillara reported in July that Broadcom had lost the socket to competitor Nvidia Corp. in the next-generation video iPod, due out next year.
