Nokia, Shanghai Unicom demo EGPRS in China

A slew of advanced data services based on Nokia's EGPRS solution were demonstrated by Shanghai Unicom at its EGPRS Data Service Press Conference in Shanghai last week (Nov. 22).

"EGPRS will bring new and exciting, high quality services to end-users, in particular higher bandwidth services," said Zhang Jian, general manager of Shanghai Unicom. "With Nokia's advanced EGPRS solutions and the optimization experience of both companies, we can also bring higher capacity to the network, better utilize our network resources and reduce operation costs."

EGPRS is a form of EDGE that allows data connections of up to 474Kbps. It is said to open up numerous possibilities for connecting data networks on mobile phones, thus making it faster and more convenient to stream video and download larger files.

The data services comprise of NFC, push email, vCard and WAP browsing, and is based on Nokia's EGPRS solutions which are expected to provide a platform to enhance Shanghai Unicom's data services and drive business innovation.

EGPRS-enabled mobile devices from Nokia were demonstrated in the event, which also marks the first public EGPRS service demonstration of China Unicom Ltd, Shanghai Unicom's parent company.
