Fujitsu develops optical element for thermal magnetic recording

Fujitsu Ltd has developed a multilayered optical element for thermal-assisted magnetic recording. The element can produce a subhundred nanometer optical spot size that is crucial for deploying one terabit per square inch recording technology for HDDs.

"This achievement is an exciting milestone for high density recording development, as well as for the storage industry as a whole," said Joel Hagberg, VP of marketing and business development, Fujitsu Computer Products of America. "With this accomplishment, Fujitsu is paving the way for HDD manufacturers to effectively meet the demands of PC and CE vendors for ultra-high capacity HDD products."

At present, the HDD industry is implementing perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) to meet the increasing demand for high-capacity storage solutions in the PC and consumer electronics markets.

Combining optical thermal assist and PMR is of high interest to the HDD industry as it can offer manufacturers a solution to reach storage capacities of around 10 times greater than what is now possible, said the press release from Fujitsu.

Continuous R&D efforts for terabit recording put thermal-assisted magnetic recording in a crucial spot. For this method to work, it requires a very small optical spot with high optical transmission efficiency on the recording media.

Using a specially designed optical element, Fujitsu said it achieved a spot size of 88-by-60nm with 17 percent optical efficiency. The optical element adopted a multilayered structure with an optical transmission layer. Fujitsu claims to be the first to achieve a subhundred nanometer optical spot with a layered optical element.

Fujitsu's work on optical element for thermal-assisted magnetic recording is part of the 'Terabyte optical storage technology' project of the Optoelectronic Industry and Technology Development Association and The Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan in 2002. Moreover, it was also a part of the project of The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization and METI since 2003.
