Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg Co. Ltd (TSMC) and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) are reportedly increasing their efforts to raise their flash memory market shares. TSMC is reportedly going to focus on NOR flash while SMIC will concentrate on NAND.

According to CEO Rick Tsai, TSMC's memory products are forecast to share 3 percent to 5 percent of its overall revenues next year. Industry sources claim that Taiwan foundry will manufacture NOR flash products at its 12-inch fab plant in 2007, which will add capacity to the company's 8-inch Fab 6 capacity.

Currently, TSMC's NOR flash shipments from the 8-inch Fab 6 reaches 10,000 wafers per month. In 2007, the company is slated to begin production of NOR flash at its 12-inch fab.

Meanwhile, SMIC targets to penetrate the emerging consumer electronics market via its collaboration with Saifun Semiconductors Ltd on 8Gbit NAND flash memory chips. The products are expected to be available by 2008.
