Prototyping board rolls for DaVinci-based systems

eInfochips has announced the availability of a DaVinci prototyping board. The DVPB prototyping board features all commonly used video system peripheral interfaces, reducing the hardware design cycle and enabling OEMs/ODMs to go to market quickly with their target applications.

The board addresses the demand for prototyping and application development for streaming media applications that include smart IP surveillance camera, network video server, video conferencing systems, video phones, consumer multimedia applications, automotive infotainment and IP STB.

As a TI third-party partner, eInfochips is targeting a sizeable market window for IP surveillance systems on TI's DaVinci platform. It has designed several applications on the TI DM642 platform addressing the streaming media domain. This domain expertise coupled with access to TI's technology triggered the development of the product.

Rapid prototyping
The DVPB is a small-footprint board suitable for rapid prototyping. The board features peripheral interfaces for A/V I/O, Ethernet, USB, SD, ATA, VLYNQ and others interfaces such as RS232, RS485 and GPIO.

While a key challenge was to minimize BOM, power and size of the system, eInfochips' design team had to address other significant technical challenges, with regard to interfacing, support for peripherals and signal integrity.

"The most significant challenge was to keep all interfaces on the edge of the board, and still meet the requirements of signal integrity and board size. Another challenge was the availability of driver and test software for some of the interfaces. Due to these challenges, the board layout was an interactive process, and had to go through run-time changes in design, resulting in longer development cycle and one re-spin of the board," eInfochips' VP for marketing, Tapan Joshi, told EE Times-India.

The design team also addressed the challenge of handling 1.8V and 3.3V digital interfaces on different peripherals. The system had to provide support for CMOS/CCD image sensors, along with camera input on the same board. It had to handle multiplexed interfaces. It was also required to support various boot mode options on the board.

The DVPB will come bundled with a boot-loader and software utilities so that application developers can quickly re-target applications from the TI DVEVM to DVPB. The software utilities that come bundled with the board include the U-Boot Bootloader, test utilities and sample codes, demo application for a surveillance system based on H.264/MPEG4, and optional device drivers and firmware for the board.

"eInfochips has a track record of enabling our OEM customers to accelerate product development by providing systems integration services", said Sham Banerji, head of software development, TI India. "As an early adopter of DaVinci technology, eInfochips has gained expertise on DaVinci. Customers will get access to eInfochips' DaVinci rapid prototyping platform in addition to their expert system integration skills."

Joshi believes that being an early adopter of the DaVinci technology strongly positions eInfochips as a leading solution provider for the streaming media market. He is also optimistic that this announcement will open up system engineering opportunities for eInfochips.

The DVPB board will be available for volume shipping by the third week of December 2006. The board is priced at $1,299 for low volumes.
