New Japan Radio's NJM2552 IF detector IC

New Japan Radio Co. Ltd (NJR) has announced the NJM2552, an IF detector IC with an integrated FM/AM detector circuit for use in multifunction wideband receivers.

Multifunction wideband receivers are found in both business and leisure equipment, and can receive FM and TV broadcasts in FM mode, and MW/SW broadcast, aircraft radio as well as amateur radio signals in AM mode. With so many applications, the importance of these devices as an information-gathering tool continues to expand. As their applications increase, so do demands for more wideband reception frequency and improved sensitivity.

When producing multifunction wideband receivers, small, highly integrated mounting and power-saving technologies are essential elements, especially for handy and compact battery-operated models.

The NJM2552 features integrated FM/AM detector circuits, low voltage operation and low current consumption. The device incorporates a mixer and received signal strength indicator (RSSI). Its FM/AM detector circuits includes AM automatic gain control (AGC), thereby enabling stable wideband signal reception.

The NJM2552 has an operating voltage range of 2.2-9V and a current consumption of 2.5mA at FM operation and 5mA at AM operation. It housed in a 6.5-by-4.4-by-1.15mm SSOP20 packaging that saves space on the mounting board. Thus, this device is suitable for compact and handy multifunction wideband receivers with expanding applications.

By combining R/C smoothing circuits with AM detector output terminal (14-pin) and AM AGC control output terminal (18-pin), the AM detector output level can be controlled constantly and automatically.

Engineering samples and production quantities are available for the NJM2552. Pricing is at $1.73 per unit.
