Qualcomm Inc. tipped a few more details on its 4G contender this week at Telecom World 2006, saying that CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision C will be released in the Q2 of 2007 and become commercially available in early 2009.

Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs acknowledged that 280Mbps is a "hype" number, but did not detail what real-world throughput speeds would be. The company said it will begin running demos of the technology in its labs in the spring.

Officially named Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB), it can theoretically support mobile data speeds up to 280Mbps, using MIMO technology and scalable bandwidths up to 20MHz. UMB is based somewhat off the Flash OFDM technology that Qualcomm picked up when it acquired Flarion Technologies.

UMB will eventually compete with the 3GPP's LTE (Long Term Evolution), which targets 4G downlinks of 100Mbps and uplinks of 50Mpbs using OFDMA modulation.
