MIPS Technologies Inc. recently filed a patent and trademark infringement lawsuit against Trident Microsystems Inc. on December 1 in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California.

According to the company, it has taken this next step after business discussions have failed to resolve Trident's unauthorized use of MIPS' intellectual property (IP).

"We have invested significant resources in developing this technology, as reflected in our extensive trademark and patent portfolios. While we strive to build relationships and successes based upon the licensing of authentic MIPS processor cores and architectures, we are prepared to defend and assert our IP rights where necessary to protect our investment," said Jim Kurkowski, vice president of IP.
