Indian designers are focusing mostly on front-end design, with digital design accounting for three-fourths of all design starts, according to an industry survey from the India Semiconductor Association (ISA).

One-third of these front-end designs, according to ISA, use 0.35- to 0.25m process technology for products operating in the 100-350MHz range.

More than half of India's design engineers are now engaged in front-end VLSI design, a total that is expected to increase over the next decade. Logic design dominates with 27 percent, followed by verification with 19 percent and system architecture design at 8 percent.

According to ISA, more Indian engineers will work with system architectures over the next decade while verification work remains steady and as logic design declines.

Currently, back-end design accounts for 46 percent of Indian designs. Both DXT and physical designs are expected to decline as a percentage of Indian designs as testing increases significantly, ISA said.
