NXP unveils ESD protection ICs for high-res displays

ESD protection chips from NXP

NXP has launched a new family of ESD protection chips designed to support next-generation UXGA PC and 1080p TVs resolutions used in PC notebooks, mainboards, TVs, VGA cards, STBs and other applications supporting the VGA interface.

Offering the highest screen resolutions available on the market today, Ultra eXtended Graphics Array (UXGA) is capable of displaying 1600 x 1200 resolution, or 1.9 million pixels, providing the user with a vibrant viewing experience. The IP4770/71/72CZ16 family of integrated ESD protection chips provides manufacturers a 90-percent reduction in space at board level, NXP said, resulting in major cost savings due to the reduced number of components required.

NXP's new family of ICs are application-specific solutions, offering some of the highest levels of ESD protection, level shifting for DDC lines, buffering for sync drivers and impedance matching for the sync drivers of VGA ports in a single chip. As the demand for greater screen resolution increases, these new products from NXP support the new standards and allow manufacturers to develop new vibrant media technologies.

"As devices become smaller, ESD becomes an even greater issue, as sudden bursts of electricity can damage the small electrical components. These electrical discharges can damage the product and eventually result in device failure, which can have significant cost implications for the user," said Tamim Sidiki, international product manager for integrated discretes at NXP. "The VGA cables used in today's appliances are of lower quality and longer than those previously used in the past. To address this, NXP has designed a solution that requires lowest line capacitance at the VGA port and the fastest pulse rise and fall times. This latest chip family provides a pulse rise and fall time of only 1.5ns at the sync drivers, the lowest available value for such integrated solutions."

NXP's family of ESD protection chips offers impedance matching of only 10 ohms made possible through an innovative production process at one of NXP's fabrication plants in Hamburg, Germany.

The NXP IP4770/71/72CZ16 family of integrated ESD protection chips are available immediately and are priced at 63 cents per piece in volumes of 10,000.
