Programmable 1A DC/DC offers four output options

Semtech's SC194B is a 1A DC/DC buck regulator that can be programmed to deliver 2.5-, 3-, 3.3V or 3.6V.

"The SC194B addresses the I/O voltage rail with the same high performance and small size benefits that the SC194A (a sister part which can be programmed between 1V and 1.8V) delivers for the microprocessor core voltage," said Karl Volk, director of marketing for the handheld power management group. "Not only do the high efficiency and ultralow quiescent current reduce heat and extend battery life, but the SC194B's digitally-controlled output voltage minimizes PCB area by eliminating external feedback while still allowing our customers to purchase and manage inventory for only one device to meet the 2.5-3.6V needs of many designs."

The device's two programming pins can be tied to an MCU and dynamically switched. The regulator, working from a 2.7-5.5V input, features up to 95 percent efficiency at 3.3V (200mA output). An automatic power save mode (PSAVE) uses pulse frequency modulation (PFM) at light loads to maintain very high device efficiency. While in PSAVE mode, the device quiescent current is only 17?A. Additionally, the chip's flexible clocking scheme allows the engineer to select the internal 1MHz fixed clock or connect the device to an external oscillator between 750KHz and 1.25MHz.

The SC194B has built-in soft-start, short-circuit, overvoltage and temperature protection features. The SC194B, in a 3-by-3mm Pb-free and RoHS compliant MLP-10 package, is priced at $1.69 each in 1,000-piece lots. Semtech offers comprehensive design assistance, including field- and factory-based support.
