Alps Electric said it has developed the first compact detector switch for digital cameras and other compact digital devices such as video cameras, portable audio devices and mobile phones. The SPVS switches measure 3.5-by-3.3-by-1mm, which makes it compatible for loading into ultracompact miniature digital devices. It also offers a smaller mounting area by adopting a J-bent terminal.

The SPVS series detector switches address an increasing need for accurate detection to prevent data loss caused by operational error, such as when opening and closing the lid on a device's battery or memory card slot, said the company. These detector switches detect both vertical and horizontal movement and offer a variety of functional options. When the switch is depressed it automatically triggers an "off" state.

The SPVS series provides eight formats including the normal close type, the traditional normal open type that triggers an "on" state when depressed, a right or left lever placement type and a type that allows for flexibility in mounting with or without a positioning boss.

The detection function, controlled by the stroke, measures 1.55mm from its resting point through full extension. In normal close types and normal open types, a 1.15mm off-stroke and a 1.2mm on-stroke are ensured, respectively, said the company. In addition, by applying Alps' high-precision processing technologies, initial on-off positioning tolerance is maintained within a 0.18mm range (generally 0.30mm). This small degree of tolerance absorbs inconsistencies that occur due to finger grip measurement gaps and mounting gaps from solder misalignment in manufacturing, said the company.

Samples will be available in February 2007. Sample pricing is $1 with lead times depending on location.
