Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) disclosed that its OMAP2 platform has been selected to provide multimedia functionality for one of NTT DoCoMo's newest FOMA 3G handsets, the FOMA N903i from NEC.

According to the press release, this handset, based on TI's OMAP2430 processor, delivers a wide range of entertainment and productivity functions, packaging some of the most desirable multimedia applications into a single handset supporting DVD-quality video and best-in- class VGA color display.

Consumers using the N903i will experience efficient multitasking communications such as full internet browsing, document viewing, and full music track downloading while supporting VGA resolution display, TI said. The OMAP2430 processor also enables smooth and easy functioning mobile TV and VGA resolution for viewing movies and video clips. Based on TI's high- performance, low leakage 90nm CMOS technology, the OMAP2430 integrates an ARM1136 RISC processor core and dedicated 2D/3D graphics hardware acceleration.

"We are pleased to build on our relationship with NEC as they maximize the capabilities of our OMAP2 platform to deliver increasingly sleek, multimedia- rich handsets to the market," said Richard Kerslake, TI's worldwide general manager for 3G and OMAP business. "With TI's OMAP 2430 processor, NEC has developed a handset that gives its customers access to the most desirable multimedia features available, including VGA screen, enhanced music capabilities with 3D effects and high-end gaming console functionality, all with longer battery life."
