Two executives from Sony Electronics and Dell Corp. were elected to co-chair the group revising IEEE 1625, which addresses the design, manufacture and testing of Li-ion battery cells and packs used in portable computing devices.

Jean Baronas, Sony Electronics' director of the technology standards office, and Bill Kabele, Dell's director of power engineering, are the co-chairs of the Portable Computer Battery Working Group which held its first meeting last month.

"One of the primary goals for the revised version of IEEE 1625," Baronas said, "is to establish liaisons with key standards development organizations and stakeholders to ensure better coordination, avoid conflict and support collaboration to improve battery standardization globally. We also want to submit the completed document for acceptance by the International Electrotechnical Commission as a dual-logo standard."

On its first meeting, the working group revising portable computing standard set an accelerated working schedule and now plans to complete its work within 12 months, six months ahead from the original schedule. The group formed subgroups that will focus on the cell, the pack, and the system of portable computing batteries. Another subgroup was formed to investigate all conformity assessment options and then, will make a recommendation for the revised standard by the end of the development phase.

Kabele noted that the first meeting clearly indicated how serious the industry is on improving the reliability of batteries for portable computing. "About 50 people from 30 companies attended," he said, "representing the entire global supply chain for batteries used in portable computing from cell manufacturers to OEMs, including third-party test and certification bodies."

Meanwhile, another standard, IEEE P1825, is underway for mobile batteries in digital cameras and camcorders.
