Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) projected that the flat-panel display (FPD) industry will have three 7.5G and one 8G facilities to add to the island's volume production by 2009. Vice minister of MOEA Shih Yen-Shiang said that AU Optronics Corp. (AUO) and Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO) will have new 7.5G and higher-generation TFT LCD plants in Taiwan before 2009.

Volume production of AUO's 7.5G factory at the Central Taiwan Science Park will begin by year-end, with monthly capacity of 10,000 substrates. The facility's full monthly capacity is projected to hit 60,000 units.

Meanwhile, CMO's 7.5G plant is still having equipment installation this quarter. Volume production will begin in the second quarter of 2007. The company also plans to have its 8G plant completed next year, with volume production to begin in 2008, as reported by authorities at the Kaohsiung Science Park.

Shih said that the industry expects overall FPD investment in the island to reach $10.38 billion this year. The MOEA officer also reveals that the Taiwan government has lifted the ban on manufacturers that plan to invest in front-end panel production of LCD modules and 4-inch and smaller panel cell processing on the mainland.
