Vishay device integrates RC receiver, IrDA transceiver

Vishay Intertechnology has added to its optoelectronics portfolio a new device that integrates a remote control receiver and an IReless Devices" target=_blank>IrDA transceiver into a single, 3-lens, surface-mount package for the PC market.

When assembled into a notebook or multimedia computer, the new TFDU7100 enables several functions including remote control of video or music playback and wireless sharing of photo, MP3 and other file formats. By consolidating all these functions in a single package, the TFDU7100 allows designers of PC housings to limit the number of daylight filtering windows and thus avoid a trade-off between Remote Control and IrDA functionality.

Integrated within the TFDU7100's 8-pin package are two high-speed PIN photodiodes, an IR emitter, an IrDA control IC and a remote control IC. For remote control, the TFDU7100 meets Microsoft's Media Center specifications by receiving signals with carrier frequencies from 20kHz to 60kHz over a minimum distance of 5m. Its maximum receiving distance is 18m in the 36kHz to 38kHz range. For IrDA communication, the TFDU7100 supports all IrDA data rates up to 4Mbps over the inherently secure distance of 1m.

To simplify the transition to the TFDU7100, the package is the same size and pad pitch as the Vishay 4Mbps transceiver used in 80 percent of IrDA-enabled notebook PCs today. Providing added flexibility, the device can be mounted with lenses in side- or top-looking orientation. The TFU7100 IrDA plus RC transceiver operates from 2.7V to 5.5V over the full temperature range of -25C to 85C. It is Pb-free, capable of Pb-free processing, and complies with RoHS 2002/95/EC and WEEE 2002/96/EC.

The TFDU7100 IrDA plus RC transceiver is available today. Lead time is six weeks.
