Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd is reportedly being persuaded by the municipal government of Shenyang in China to set up an 8-inch wafer fab in the city. Industry sources said that representatives from the Shenyang government began making contacts with the Chartered representatives and the two groups were reportedly having meetings.

Last October, Chartered announced its plans to establish a facility on mainland China but haven't decided on its specific location. The company, however, is currently working with CSMC Technologies Corp. for 6-inch wafer production, said Chia Song Hwee, Chartered's CEO. Meanwhile, the company's 8-inch and 13-inch wafer operations in Singapore continue to thrive.

The onslaught of 8-inch wafer fabs in mainland China is evident, according to industry observers. Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. has begun equipment installation at its new 8-inch facility in Chengdu. Test runs are slated to begin in the second quarter of 2007.

Meanwhile, the semiconductor industry in Greater China expects the Taiwan government to review its policies on permitting Taiwan-based companies to build 8-inch wafer foundries on the mainland.
