MCU and analog chip supplier Microchip Technology Inc. has formed the Medical Products Group to capture the projected strong demand for electronics in the $100 billion medical device market.

At present, demand for smarter and easier-to-use consumer medical devices is flourishing, growing 15 percent annually. Fuelling this expansion is the "consumerization" of therapeutic and diagnostic medical devices in aging baby boomers as more medical care is being done at home. Medical applications include implanted devices for cardiac rhythm management, neural stimulation, drug delivery, bariatric therapy, portable devices for diagnostic imaging, oxygen therapy, patient monitoring, home-use devices for vital-sign monitoring, disease management, rehabilitation, compliance monitoring, medical information terminals, and security for authentication of consumables, data confidentiality.

Microchip will offer its portfolio of 8bit and 16bit PIC microcontrollers, 16bit dsPIC digital signal controllers, analog and interface semiconductors, KEELOQ security products and nonvolatile memory semiconductors for the specific applications.

Moreover, Microchip has developed an online Medical Design Centre that contains application notes, design guides, reference manuals, user guides, documents and detailed product and development-tool information for designing medical applications.

"With the creation of the Medical Products Group, we are bringing Microchip's unique advantages to a market that is large and growing," said Dan Termer, VP of Microchip's vertical markets group. "Advances in semiconductors are enabling unprecedented innovation in medical devices, and Microchip is playing a vital role in enabling this trend."
