Magellan 55110 from Performance Motion Devices

The Magellan 55110 from Performance Motion Devices is a single-axis motion control processor IC with advanced stall detection features. Designed specifically for step motor applications, the chip alerts the user to a stall condition (lost steps) if motion is obstructed, or there's a system failure.

"Many cost-sensitive applications benefit from the low cost of step motors, while still achieving high reliability by using an incremental encoder for position feedback," said Chuck Lewin, president and CEO. "Stall-detection is a feature that makes the most of a step motor used in this configuration. Rather than just checking motion after it is complete, stall-detection can stop a motor the instant a problem is detected. This is a big improvement over older approaches."

In operation, the chip, which is driven by a host microprocessor using an 8bit or 16bit parallel bus, CANbus 2.0B, or an asynchronous serial port, actively monitors the targeted and actual positions while keeping track of several types of motion errors that can result in a stall condition. The user inititates monitoring by specifying the number of encoder counts per step.

The chip supports four selectable profile modes: S-curve, trapezoidal, velocity contouring and electronic gearing. The MC55110 accepts position, velocity and acceleration input parameters from the host and generates the corresponding trajectory. The chip accepts feedback from an incremental encoder at up to 10 megacounts per second, or from an absolute encoder or resolver at 160 megacounts per second.

The chip features a programmable proportional integral derivative (PID) filter with velocity and acceleration feedforward and a loop time of 50?s. In addition, the chip's trace capabilities facilitate on-the-fly data storage for analyzing system performance and performing maintenance and diagnostics.

The MC55110 is available today. Prices start at $24 in OEM quantities.
