Thermal gap filler from MH&W

The Softtherm 86/200 material from MH&W International provides an ultrasoft, thermally conductive gap filling interface between hot PCB components and cooling devices including heat spreaders, heat sinks and heat pipes.

The Softtherm 86/200 material exhibits a very low 10 Shore 00 hardness. The material can blanket over multiple components with different heights, contours and planarity, and is said to be useful on fragile components sensitive to high pressure, or when only very low mounting pressure is available for attaching a heat spreading device. In addition, the material features a highly elastic, structurally secure silicone filled with ceramic particles, and unlike many gap fillers, it retains its memory after compression which enables the material to be reused, said the company. Thermal resistance is rated at 1.5K/W and thermal conductivity is 1W/mK.

Gap filler parts made from the 86/200 material have strong wet-out and air gap-filling properties. The material is UL rated 94V-0 and has a total mass loss (TML) of under 0.40 percent. It can be used in application temperatures ranging from -60 to 200C.

The 86/200 thermal gap filler parts are available in standard and custom die-cut shapes and in sheet form in thicknesses ranging from 0.5mm to 5mm. An adhesive coating is available for permanent mounting. Typical applications include automotive engines, power supplies, medical devices, and audio and IT systems. The 86/200 can be used with heat pipes, spreader bars, heat sinks and other cooling devices.

Pricing for the material starts at 10 cents for 1-inch?, 0.5mm thick parts in high-volume orders.
