U232 module from Timewave Technology

The U232 module from Timewave Technology Inc. is an RS-232-to-USB converter. It's priced at about $80 each, with possible OEM quantity discounts available.

As a replacement for board-mounted DB-9 and DB-25 subminiature D-type connectors, the U232 offers an upgrade to 12Mbps USB 2.0 of an existing product's legacy RS-232 serial port. Async port data rates between 300bps and 115Kbps are supported. A Mini-B USB connector is part of the module.

All you need to implement the conversion is replacement of your existing D-sub connector. No electrical or physical changes are required; you replace the existing serial port connector with the U232 module on your circuit board, and that's it. The USB port on the host device supplies all power for the module.

Several models are available for both DB-9 and DB-25 connectors with long and short footprints, and right -angle PCB connectors.

The devices are available in deep (0.591-in.) footprints, normal (0.318-in.) footprints, and in custom footprints. RoHS-compliant models are also available. These ESD-protected products are supplied with a USB cable and software for Windows and Linux. ESD protection extends to 110kV spikes and pulses.
