Verizon will build the Trans-Pacific Express (TPE)!the first next-generation undersea optical cable system that will directly link the United States and China!that will offer capacity of up to 5.12Tbps. This is equivalent to 62 million simultaneous phone calls, or over 60 times the overall capacity of the existing cable directly linking the two countries.

"This state-of-the-art cable will support high-speed traffic to the world's fastest-growing region!the Asia-Pacific," said Fred Briggs, Verizon Business' executive VP of operations and technology. He cited that the project "further recognizes the emergence of China as a diverse communications hub for Asia."

Worth over $500 million, TPE will initially provide 1.28Tbps. It will also offer customers another 'first'!access to the cable system at up to 10Gbps.

Spanning over 18, 000km, the system is designed to meet the increasing demands for IP, data and voice communications in the Asia-Pacific region as well as to support future Internet growth and advanced applications such as video and e-commerce in the region.

"In addition to a diverse route directly to China, this cable will add capacity and the higher-speed service customers are demanding," Briggs said. "We also will improve provisioning intervals and reduce latency for traffic between the U.S. and many countries in the region."

The cable will land on China at Qingdao and Chongming and on the U.S. West Coast at Nedonna Beach, Oregon. Other landings will be located in Tanshui, Taiwan, and Keoje, South Korea.

For this project, Verizon will collaborate with a consortium that includes China Telecom, China Netcom, China Unicom, Korea Telecom and Chunghwa Telecom (Taiwan). Construction of the cable system will begin in Q1 of 2007. The system is expected to be completed by Q3 of 2008.
