WiMAX products vendor Aperto Networks Inc. is said to locate a manufacturing facility in India that would produce WiMAX modems and then, ultimately, base stations. The company is considering either Bengaluru or neighboring Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

Aperto last week said its products were being deployed across India by a state-owned telecoms operator. The company is in talks with both overseas and Indian manufacturing firms and expects to have an agreement in place early next year.

The company wants to manufacture in India chiefly to meet the needs of the Indian market, where it anticipates the demand for hundreds of thousands of WiMAX modems in the next two years. Indian operators are projected to invest about $500 million in building WiMAX infrastructure.

Aperto executives said the company will invest significantly in India to grow its market share, tripling the size of its R&D center in Bengaluru set up earlier this year and setting up customer support and repair centers.

In addition, the company said a week ago that the Indian state-owned telecoms operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) had started rolling out Aperto's carrier-grade, WiMAX Forum certified products. Aperto's PacketMAX base stations and PM 300 subscriber units are being deployed in several Indian cities and rural areas as the company won a bid to tender issued by BSNL two years ago.
