USB controller delivers high-speed data rate

Oxford's OXU200 USB peripheral controller

Oxford Semiconductor Inc. has introduced the OXU200, a high-speed USB peripheral controller designed to help maximize data transfer speeds of memory-rich portable products including smart phones, media players, PDAs and GPS systems. Compatible with USB 2.0, the new device supports communication with PC and laptop host systems at the high-speed USB data rate.

With a 16bit SRAM-like memory mapped interface and a flexible I/O voltage range of 1.65-3.6V, the controller provides seamless interface to all popular embedded microprocessors and DSPs. 8Kbytes of on-chip SRAM are included and a DMA slave channel helps lower system CPU usage and ensure high data throughput.

Needing just a single 3.3V supply, the low-power OXU200 is suitable for mobile applications requiring a combination of low power consumption and high performance. The controller features an ultralow-power sleep mode and a power-preserving suspend state to help extend system battery life.

To reflect the board space constraints faced by portable system designers, Oxford is offering the OXU200 in a choice of space saving packages: a 12-by-12mm 100-pin LQFP and a 6-by-6mm 64-ball BGA package. Both chip packages are RoHS-compliant and support an operating temperature range of -40C to 85C.

The OXU200 is supported with USB device drivers and the Oxford Semiconductor USBLink software suite. Low-level controller drivers for other native USB peripheral stacks are also available, such as those included with Windows CE and Linux 2.6.X.

In 10,000 volumes, the OXU200 high-speed USB peripheral controller is priced at $3.45 in the LQFP package and $3.85 in the BGA package. Production begins Q1 2007.
