Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has permitted three chipmakers to invest a total of $825 million in mainland China.

The Taiwan government has reportedly permitted Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. (ASE), ProMOS Technologies Inc. and Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. (PSC) to invest in mainland China, according to industry sources. ASE reportedly will invest $60 million, PSC $400 million and ProMOS $365 million.

ProMOS and PSC have submitted their applications to move 8-inch wafer fab production in mainland China way back in 2004. However, the review process of the government has taken longer than expected due to the political tension between Taiwan and mainland China. Moreover, based on the review results, the government has no plans of allowing chipmakers to use 0.18m technology in their facilities in mainland China.
