Second-tier DRAM makers in Taiwan expect strong market for DRAM and other memory modules this year amid various investments and expansion projects announced by companies.

Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. (PSC) and Elpida Memory Inc. recently announced a memory fab joint venture in Taiwan. The joint venture will include PSC's 300mm fab, currently under construction, which is expected to bring in investments of up to $14 billion within the next five years.

Meanwhile, ProMOS Tehcnologies Inc. and Nanya Technology Corp. are allotting $1.2 billion and $1.8 billion, respectively, in setting up new 300mm fab plants as well as upgrading production technology this year.

Research firm iSuppli believes that the release of Microsoft Vista pushed second-tier makers to see robust demand through next year, compared to the outlook of tier-one makers. The worldwide DRAM revenue for 2007 is projected to reach $36.9 billion, up 11 percent from 2006's estimates of $33.2 billion.
