Wide notebook PC products will continue to dominate the market, according to DisplaySearch, growing to more than 87 percent of the market by the fourth quarter of 2007. Driving this growth is the increasing preference for wide over standard aspect displays and the increasing implementation of wide notebook computers in IT enterprises.

According to DisplaySearch's Quarterly Notebook PC Shipment and Forecast Report, the 15.4-inch 1280 x 800 notebook panel size is currently the most popular panel size across regions such as the Asia Pacific, the United States, Europe and Africa except in Japan, where it trails 15-inch 1024 x 768.

DisplaySearch noted that the 'top' five brands in the market offer notebook computers in five or more display sizes. HP and Dell are less reliant on one particular panel size. Neither brand ships more than 45 percent of their laptops at any one size, while Acer, Lenovo and Toshiba each have more than 50 percent of their shipments within one size.

The research firm noted that the existing panel size differences between brands function for the different target markets of each maker.

"Differences in the penetration of wide-aspect ratio notebooks for each brand are dependant upon a number of factors," said John Jacobs, director of Notebook Market Research, DisplaySearch. "For a long time, many brands promoted wide as a differentiating factor, and charged a premium for these products, even after panel prices between comparable wide and standard aspect panels disappeared. Brands that were hungry for market share were quick to drop the street price premium, even running 'free-upgrade' promotions encouraging customers to make the transition. Additionally, brands with a heavier reliance on the enterprise market faced the additional hurdle of convincing IT managers to embrace wide products and support additional configurations."
