MLCCs feature 'reverse geometry' terminations

Taiyo Yuden Inc. has announced an addition to its line of high-performance multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC). The nine models in the WK series employ "reverse geometry" terminations and other design improvements to provide high performance relative to device size. WK series maximum capacitance values are 0.47F, 4.7F and 10F in 0402, 0603 and 0805 case sizes, respectively.

These ratings represent an almost two-fold performance improvement over previous company devices of equal size. The WK series includes the smallest low-ESL devices (now in 0402) and the industry's highest-capacitance values for both 0603 and 0805. Available voltage ratings are 4V (0402; 0603), 6.3V (0603; 0805) and 16V (0805).

Reversed length-to-width ratio
Representing Taiyo Yuden's entry into the low-ESL capacitor market, the new reverse-geometry MLCCs are so named because their length-to-width ratio has been reversed. Forming the electrodes on the long dimension of the device, instead of end-wise, widens and shortens the current path between terminations, thus reducing inductance and resistancea particularly desirable attribute for decoupling circuits.

Today's high-clock-speed CPUs are boosting demand for lower ESL values in the decoupling capacitors used to help stabilize system operation. Achieving low ESL used to require using many capacitors in parallel, resulting in circuit layout constraints and higher costs. Taiyo Yuden's experience in size reduction and thin-layering technology, enhanced by recent advances in terminal electrode formation, led to the successful development of the reverse-geometry WK series, which reduces the number of required capacitors and facilitates the design of lower-cost decoupling circuits.

  • JWK107BJ225MV (2.2F; 20 percent; 6.3V; 0603)

  • JWK107BJ105MV (1.0F; 20 percent; 6.3V; 0603)

  • JWK212BJ106MD ( 10F; 20 percent; 6.3V; 0805)

  • JWK212BJ475KD (4.7F; 10 percent; 6.3V; 0805)

  • EWK212BJ105KD (1F; 10 percent; 16V; 0805)

All devices have a temperature rating of -55C to 105C.

In OEM quantities, devices sized at 0402 (1-by-0.5-by-0.3mm) are priced at 15 cents; devices sized at 0603 (1.6-by-0.8-by-0.8mm) are priced at 20 cents; devices sized at 0805 (2-by-1.25-by-0.85mm) are priced at 30 cents.

All devices are available in production volumes. Delivery is two to four weeks ARO.
