The WiMAX Forum's Spectrum and Regulatory Database has been completed and is being made available to help member companies plan their regional product rollouts.

The database represents a worldwide effort by the forum to compile frequency availability, spectrum licensing, and regulatory information for more than 75 countriesa task that highlights the lack of a single frequency band for the technology.

The database currently provides data for 2.3-, 2.5-, 3.5-, 3.7- and 5.8GHz frequency bands. It was developed in collaboration with AT4 wireless (formerly CETECOM Spain).

"Radio spectrum availability and ownership is a major issue for the deployment of new networks and new access technologies such as WiMAX", said Phil Lorch, WiMAX Program Manager at Agilent Technologies. "This database is an excellent resource for our industry and will be a great way for prospective 4G network operators to understand the availability of this scarce resource."

The database tool enables members to create custom single-country reports, including technical details, licensing, regulatory and other spectrum-related issues for specific countries. It also can be used to compile multiple-country reports.

WiMAX technology has been gaining ground recently after a slow start. On Dec. 15, Samsung announced it expects WiMAX to be the technology adopted for 4G cellular systems.
